What We Do
Union of Strict Observance Lodge Nº 3 is dedicated to the work of building better men.
Through ritual, mentorship, education, and fraternity, we help good men develop leadership, character, and purpose — not just within the lodge, but in their daily lives.
We meet in the historic Detroit Masonic Temple, where our lodge has carried out its work for nearly 100 years. Here, men of all backgrounds gather to learn from one another, support one another, and become part of a brotherhood rooted in honor and integrity.
Our work includes:
• Conferring the three Symbolic Degrees of Masonry
• Community charity and assistance
• Mentorship and personal development
• Fellowship events for members and families
• Participation in Detroit Masonic Temple preservation efforts
Whether you’re seeking personal growth, community, tradition, or simply good men to stand beside, Lodge Nº 3 welcomes you.
Located in the historic Detroit Masonic Temple, our lodge meets where generations of Detroit craftsmen, engineers, veterans, and leaders have gathered. We raise Master Masons—not just through degree work, but through real-world character, leadership, mentorship, and service in a city that demands grit.
Masons Stay Active in Community, Church, and School
Freemasons convene regularly at their established Lodge, the local organization of Freemasonry, to conduct business, foster fellowship, and engage in discussions on matters of Masonic interest. Committed to upholding the principles of good citizenship, each Lodge strives to play a dynamic, respected, and involved role in community life. Additionally, Lodges actively seek to form partnerships within the community, aiming to contribute to the public’s well-being and simultaneously cultivate the character of Masons.
Freemasons have a rich history of pioneering educational initiatives, including establishing some of the earliest public schools in Europe and America. Advocating for universal education, Masons were instrumental in supporting legislation to make learning accessible to all. In the 1800s, Masons actively lobbied to develop state-supported education and federal land-grant colleges. Notably, in 1817, the Zion Lodge in Detroit was vital in funding the newly founded University of Michigan
.
Today, Freemasons continue their dedication to education by contributing millions of dollars in scholarships annually. Members are strongly encouraged to volunteer their time in local schools, supply teachers with classroom materials, participate in literacy programs, and actively contribute to ensuring that everyone, regardless of age, has access to the finest educational opportunities.
